The Soren family’s power game in Jharkhand: A tale of nepotism, betrayal and staying in power

The Soren Power Games in Jharkhand

The political landscape of Jharkhand has long been dominated by the Soren family, whose influence spans decades. But with time, their grip on power seems to be becoming more fragile and controversial. The recent ouster of Champai Soren, a leading member of the Jharkhand statehood movement, has brought to light the deep-rooted nepotism and infighting within the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM).This has led many to wonder whether the Soren family is more interested in preserving their legacy than the welfare of the state.

For over four decades, Champai Soren has been a central figure in the struggle for statehood for Jharkhand and led Andhra people from the frontline in their quest for statehood for Jharkhand. He was a formidable leader who played a key role and contributed immensely to the movement along with notable figures such as the late Shri Binod Bihari Mahto. However, despite his achievements, Champhai’s political path took a dark turn as he found himself marginalised within the party he helped to establish.

Champhai Soren came to power in Jharkhand during a turbulent time and led the coalition government for four months. Though his term was short, it was marked by his efforts to stabilise the government and introduce social programmes that improved the lives of the people of the state.

However, his term was cut short when Shibu Soren’s son Hemant Soren returned from prison and quickly regained power. This transfer of power was seen as a betrayal by many, especially given Champhai’s role in uniting the party during difficult times. The fact that Champhai Soren was absent has led to growing speculation and discontent, especially in the Kolhan region, with people asking, “Is it because he is Soren but not Shiv’s son?”

Family first, country last:

The Soren family’s power struggle The Soren family’s rule has been criticized for prioritizing their own interests over the welfare of Jharkhand. Hemant Soren’s return to power was marked by a rapid restoration of control, independent of the alliances and support that had kept the party afloat during his absence. The sense of entitlement exuded by the Soren family alienated many within and outside the JMM and fuelled growing discontent among the people of Jharkhand.

Corruption allegations against Shiv and Hemant Soren further deepened the disillusionment. Allegations of corruption and nepotism have tarnished the image of the JMM, leading many to believe that the Soren family is more interested in retaining power and wealth than truly serving the people of Jharkhand.

Shri Vinod Bihari Mahto’s Legacy and the Soren Monopoly

The exclusion of leaders like Champai Soren not only reflects an internal power struggle but also raises a broader issue within the JMM – the Soren family’s monopoly of power. While Shibu Soren is often cited as the face of the Jharkhand movement, it is important to remember that the struggle to gain statehood was a collective effort. Leaders like Shri Vinod Bihari Mahto played a key role in the movement and contributed significantly to the creation of the state.

But for many years, the narrative has been dominated by the Soren family, who have virtually taken over the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha and turned it into a family-run business. This monopoly has marginalized other key players, reduced diversity within the party and led to the concentration of power within a single family.

Growing Discontent

The people of Jharkhand are increasingly frustrated by the ongoing infighting within the JMM. The sense of betrayal among those who have supported the Sorens for years is palpable and there is a growing demand for leadership that puts national development above personal interests. The repeated marginalization of capable leaders like Champai Soren, coupled with deep-rooted corruption and nepotism, have led many to question whether the Sorens are fit to lead Jharkhand into the future.

Conclusion

The Sorens’ desire to retain power at all costs is proving to be detrimental to both their party and the state of Jharkhand. As the people of Jharkhand grow weary of the same old power struggles, the question remains: Will the Sorens finally put the nation’s interest above their own, or will their legacy be one of missed opportunities and unfulfilled promises?
